Water heater rebates in 2026: what's actually available

Search for water heater rebates and you'll find plenty of articles promising big money back — many of them describing programs that no longer exist. Before you budget around an incentive, here's what has actually ended, what may still be available, and how to verify it yourself. We'd rather you hear it from us than discover it after the install.

Any article or contractor still quoting these for a 2026 installation is working from an old page:

• Federal 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit. Terminated for any equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025. It previously covered 30 percent of qualifying heat pump water heaters — that door is closed for 2026 installs.
• TECH Clean California single-family incentives. Fully reserved statewide; no new single-family reservations since late 2025.
• HEEHRA single-family rebates. Fully reserved, with income verification for new single-family projects closed in early 2026.

If you installed a qualifying system in 2025 or earlier, you may still have a 2025 tax-return question — that's a conversation for your tax professional, and the sooner the better.

• Utility rebates. Gas and electric utilities periodically offer rebates on high-efficiency water heaters — ENERGY STAR tankless units are the usual candidates. Amounts and availability change often, so check your utility's current program before counting on one.
• The DSIRE database. The Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (dsireusa.org) lists active programs by zip code — the single most reliable way to see what's live where you live.
• Manufacturer and retailer promotions. Equipment makers and big-box retailers run their own promos and instant rebates from time to time — worth a look while you're comparing models.

1. 1Look up your zip code on DSIRE (dsireusa.org) and note which programs are marked active — not "pending" or "fully reserved."
2. 2Check your gas and electric utility's rebate page directly. Programs open and close mid-year; the utility's own page is the source of truth.
3. 3Get any incentive promise in writing — program name, amount, and who pays it. A verbal "you'll get the tax credit" isn't a plan.
4. 4Run tax questions past a tax professional before you sign — especially for anything installed in 2025 that might still qualify.
